2020-2021 Studio Opportunities

Megan Gilles is a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA)/Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) (local chapter-Willmar Music Teachers Association) Currently Megan serves as the Treasurer of the WMTA. She serves as the Site Administrator for the Willmar site for Music Bridges, Piano Exam, and Theory Exam and also the MMTA Ensemble Festival. She will also be the Site Administrator for one Theory Virtual Exam date and one Piano Virtual Exam date.

Megan is also a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) (local club-Great River Music Club).

These organizations provide the students with the opportunity to participate in many different performance options and workshops.

There are two studio recitals held throughout the year.

All students will participate in both Winter and Spring studio recitals.

Dennis Alexander Festival and Competition

Registration Deadline: March 22, 2021

Date: April 10, 2021

Where: St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN

Cost: $25.00

Competition and repertoire workshops, at three levels, and Composer-Dennis Alexander will be presenting a Creative Workshop, mid-day.  There will be an Improv-Take 2 (at all three levels) conducted by noted jazz musicians, John Harlander and Jeff Engholm.

National Federation of Music Clubs

NFMC Festival- Two pieces are performed on the piano and played for a judge (piano teacher) who provides comments to improve on and the positives of the musical performance. For Piano Solo, music is memorized. A certificate is awarded every year. Points are collected towards earning a festival cup. 15 points needed to earn a cup. 5 points for top score-Superior; 4 points for Excellent; 3 points; 2 points; 1 point or disqualification/0 points are also possible.

Minnesota Music Teachers Association

All MMTA events require registration at least six weeks prior to the event except for MMTA Finals and Honors Concert Registration which is due the week following Preliminaries/Finals respectively.

MMTA Challenge Award-Students who participate in MMTA programs will be able to take part in earning points towards the challenge awards. Awards are displayed in the studio.

  • MMTA Logowear Design Contest

Students are invited to design a logo for MMTA. The winning design will be printed on MMTA t-shirts. “Logowear” items will be sold to thousands of MMTA contest, festival, exam, and convention participants during the calendar year.

Date: Sunday, November 8, 2020

Where: Bethel Lutheran Church, 411 Becker Ave. SW, Willmar

Time: TBD. There may be several recitals depending on the number of students participating. 

Cost: $22.00 per ensemble (divided between players)

For this year, limit of 50 attendees per recital. Attempt will be made to broadcast performance live via Zoom or Facebook live. All attendees will need to wear masks.

  • MMTA State Piano Contest

Registration deadline: December 1, 2020

Date: Preliminaries are

Finals are Saturday/ Sunday- March 6/7, 2021 (students will choose the date)


Honors Concert will be June 5, 2021-7:00PM at the Minneapolis Convention Center

To encourage high performance standards, MMTA sponsors an annual State Piano Contest. Pianists with the highest scores in the Contest Finals are selected for ensemble performance in the State Honors Contest. This concert is a gala event involving 700 young performers playing on 20 grand pianos in ensemble groups. One piano piece is memorized and performed for this contest. A different piece is learned for the Honors Concert.

  • MMTA State Piano Festival

To encourage performance for all ages by using the State Contest repertoire, MMTA sponsors an annual State Piano Solo Festival. Students who cannot or do not wish to compete in Piano Contest may perform for written comments from a judge. Festival participants are not eligible for Finals or the Honors Concert. There is no age or category requirement or restriction and there is no theory requirement for Piano Solo Festival.
